Your willingness to share your journey helps bring greater visibility to the experiences of online students and highlights the growing need for inclusive opportunities, like fraternity and sorority involvement, within virtual learning environments.

Before we start, we like to highlight business owners as part of our commitment to supporting small businesses. If you are a business owner, we invite you to share your business name, website, or any relevant details, so we can help amplify your work alongside your personal story.

What inspired you to pursue an online college education, and how did you get started?

I wanted to set a positive example for my child by completing college. Despite life's unexpected turns, I never gave up on this goal. I realized that traditional college wouldn't fit my responsibilities as a parent. Online college provided the flexibility I needed to juggle parenting, work, and studies simultaneously.

What challenges have you faced while pursuing your degree online, and how have you overcome them?

In the face of divorce, single parenthood, a heart attack, and COVID, I have persevered. Nothing can hinder my determination. When I encountered these obstacles, I kept in mind my child who looks up to me. I refuse to give up until I cross the finish line. There were times I wanted to quit, and crawl back in bed, but I did not. I pushed myself to my limits and then smiled as I conquered one class at a time.

How have you balanced your online coursework with other responsibilities, such as work or family?

I am grateful for the unwavering support of my family. Attending every school event or work charity function is a top priority for me. I diligently plan my school schedule every Sunday to ensure I strike a balance between my academic and family commitments. Daily dinners are non-negotiable, and if I can't be there in person, I make sure to FaceTime to greet my loved ones. During my lunch break at work, I efficiently tackle small assignments. I also use the time when my daughter is doing her homework to focus on my own tasks. This delicate juggling act is a testament to my commitment to both my education and my family.

What have you found to be the benefits of pursuing a college education online, compared to traditional on-campus learning?

I have found that online college education allows for more flexibility. I can still work and pursue my college education. I do not have to miss school drop-offs, breakfast with my child, or band concerts. I have flexibility. For most parents or full time workers, we have financial responsibilities which we cannot ignore.

How have you stayed motivated and engaged in your online classes, and what strategies have you used to ensure your success?

Online classes does require motivation. I message my classmates in our groupme when things are difficult. It is very nice having the support of others who are facing the same struggles. I also reach out to my family who encourages me to hold my head up. Even my coworkers support me. Having a schedule to make things easier is the best strategy. I use my calendar frequently to ensure nothing is missed, not even date night with my husband.

What does it signify to you when organizations like Sigma Chi Psi Sorority and Gamma Sigma Gamma Fraternity attempt to bridge the social gap for students who are pursuing their education online?

It is imperative for organizations such as Sigma Chi Psi Sorority and Gamma Sigma Gamma Fraternity to exist. Numerous students are eager to make a positive impact and give back to the community. Online students are some of the most dedicated, talented, and exceptional individuals in the world. This signifies genuine care, the desire to offer assistance, and the wish to unite in sisterhood or brotherhood to establish an enduring bond. For me, it signifies being there for a brother or sister when they need support.

What significance does socializing, networking, and participating in events focused on networking and community service hold for you?

I am passionate about community service and networking. In my current role, I assist in organizing a community service event each month. Most recently, this included providing meals for the homeless and collecting toys for children at Christmas. Every August, we hold a backpack and school supply drive for children. Giving back to the community brings me immense joy. I have put in a lot of effort to network with other businesses to make these events possible. For instance, I have secured a restaurant that donates food for an annual charity golf tournament. Networking is crucial. Whether it's through an email, a dinner banquet, a coffee meeting, or a simple text message, others are eager to help and participate in these events. They just need someone to reach out to them.
