What inspired you to pursue an online college education, and how did you get started?
It as had to pursue a college as a single mother at a brick and mortar school so I chose online schooling.
What challenges have you faced while pursuing your degree online, and how have you overcome them?
It is extremely hard to be my own cheerleader. I have family support but I moved away from Houston to have a better life for my daughter and I. I wanted to give up because I was dragging myself out of my comfort zone and I was looking at myself as a loser. I never had a role model but I will be one for my daughter.
How have you balanced your online coursework with other responsibilities, such as work or family?
I am in a fortunate situation where I don’t have to work and all I have to do is concentrate on school. That is truly a blessing from God. I am able to get government assistance to take care of my daughter.
What have you found to be the benefits of pursuing a college education online, compared to traditional on-campus learning?
Traditional on campus learning is hard to do. It takes too much time and is extremely hectic. Doing online learning is amazing because it is from the comfort of my own home and I am able to concentrate without distractions.
How have you stayed motivated and engaged in your online classes, and what strategies have you used to ensure your success?
I’ve learned to set aside time for just learning. While my daughter is at school, I have hours to learn and study. I make time to take a break to give myself space to recover and then I get back to learning
What does it signify to you when organizations like Sigma Chi Psi Sorority and Gamma Sigma Gamma Fraternity attempt to bridge the social gap for students who are pursuing their education online?
I am so happy that someone finally created a sorority/fraternity for people doing online learning. It is really hard to not have a support system and I believe that Sigma Chi Psi has created a way to bring people closer together while pursuing their online degree. If I wanted to pledge, I would have to go to school on campus and that is difficult in this part of my life.
What significance does socializing, networking, and participating in events focused on networking and community service hold for you?
Being able to socialize and network in events would hold a very high standard for me. This will allow me to meet people from Multicultural backgrounds and will help me to branch out and break out of my shell. I am an extroverted introvert and I love to talk to people, but I am also shy. For me to be in Signa Chi Psi will be an honor and a privilege and to solidify a sisterhood of women who want better for themselves and bring up the next generation.
